Borussia Dortmund momentarily climbed to the top of Bundesliga standings after their narrow win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Niko Kovac beat his former club after his side lost top spot in the wake of uninspiring draws with Werder Bremen and Union Berlin.
With their former legendary coach Jürgen Klopp in attendance, Dortmund started the game on a positive note. Noah Atubolu’s first save came in the 15th minute from a decent effort by Serhou Guirassy, who ended the Black and Yellows' goal drought with a brace at Sabah in the Champions League.
A couple of minutes later, the Guinean striker failed in his attempt to chip Atubolu with an even bigger chance. The hosts continued their pressure as Nnamdi Collins saved by the woodwork from beating his own goalkeeper in the half-hour mark.
At the other end, Felix Nmecha's mistake presented a golden opportunity for Younes Ebnoutalib, but Gregor Kobel pulled a save from Frankfurt's first big chance. Adi Hütter's side settled into the game after that, with Nmecha's injury-time effort the only chance the hosts created for the rest of the half.
There was a slight delay at the start of the second-half because of fireworks. Guirassy had the first chance of the half as Dortmund hit the woodwork for the second time. Kovac's side had a total of 13 corner-kicks in the game, but they hardly create goal scoring opportunities from them.
With only ten minutes left on the clock, Jobe Bellingham registered an assist in his first action of the game as fellow substitute Maximilian Beier broke the deadlock with a brilliant finish. The makeshift wingback also scored Dortmund's winner against Stuttgart on matchday 4.
Frankfurt will now face HSV in back-to-back games as their cup tie will follow a matchday 8 encounter. Kovac's men will host the in-form Werder Bremen for the second time this month before next week's showdown against FC Bayern.
