Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to newly promoted SV 07 Elversberg in their opening game of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season on Saturday.

In their first league game under new head coach Carles Martínez, Die Werkself found themselves 2-0 down after just nine minutes.

Captain Edmond Tapsoba made mistakes that handed Elversberg possession before both goals and took responsibility when speaking to the media after the game.

“We started badly in both halves. We conceded two goals in less than ten minutes, and then again in the second half. After that, we tried to come back, but we couldn’t get it back to 3-3,” Tapsoba told Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger.

“It was one of those bad days, especially for me. My first Bundesliga game as captain – and today was simply a bad day. Now it’s over. There’s nothing we can change about it anymore. We have to forget about it as quickly as possible and focus on the next game.”

Leverkusen’s next game will be at home against 1. FC Union Berlin next Saturday.
