Thioune and Niemeyer remain discreet over timing of Bremen debut for new defender Wójcik

Daniel Thioune and Peter Niemeyer preferred not to give any tips regarding a potential debut date for Werder Bremen's new signing Oskar Wójcik. The center-back joined the club early in the transfer market, but a pre-season injury forced him to miss the opening games of the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga.
The 23-year-old has since been named in Bremen’s squad against RB Leipzig and Köln. However, he was an unused substitute on both occasions. Despite making a good first impression in friendlies, the muscular injury denied him a chance to start the competitive season in good form.
"It's always unfortunate when a player who has just joined a club gets injured during preparations,” Bremen’s head of first team Niemeyer said about the situation. “Oskar (Wójcik) therefore still needs a little time to get back into his rhythm.”
Bremen’s coach Thioune also refrained from providing a timeframe for his first competitive appearance. “Oskar Wójcik and Mick Schmetgens, both of whom are currently in good physical shape, are definitely the first players I'd put on the pitch. Because I don't see Niklas (Stark) playing for 90 minutes yet. When he becomes a starter is currently not foreseeable." said the 52-year-old boss.
However, Amos Pieper and the captain Marco Friedl have been irreplaceable so far at the heart of Bremen’s defense. The 19-year-old Schmetgens featured off the bench in all four games, while Stark and Wójcik are yet to play a single minute.
The Poland international joined the Green and Whites from Cracovia for €3 million after his breakthrough season in Ekstraklasa. The 1.91m-tall defender was previously linked with a move to Fiorentina in the summer.
“The international break will do him good, no matter whether he ends up with the Poland national team or with us." Niemeyer added in his latest interview with DeichStube.
