VfL Wolfsburg have been relegated from the Bundesliga after losing the second leg of their play-off 2-1 against SC Paderborn after extra time on Monday night.
Speaking to Sky Germany after the match, Wolfsburg supervisory board member Diego Benaglio expressed the depth of the disappointment.
He pointed to Joakim Mæhle’s early red card, which came after Dženan Pejcinović had given Wolfsburg the lead, as a decisive blow for Die Wölfe.
“The disappointment is huge for all of us. Right now, I just feel empty. We gave everything. Over 100 minutes with one man down – it wasn’t easy. It feels brutal,” Benaglio said.
“We started the match really well with the goal. And before the game I could also sense from the lads that they were fired up, that they were burning. I’m convinced that with eleven men we wouldn’t have lost this match.”
VfL Wolfsburg and Diego Benaglio will now have to come to terms with the fact that they will be playing 2. Bundesliga football next season.
