VfB Stuttgart beat fellow Bundesliga side Paderborn to book their place in the Round of 16 in the DFB-Pokal. Sebastian Hoeneß's men had a difficult start to the campaign, but they managed to beat their hosts for the second time at Home Deluxe Arena this month.
Paderborn had a strong start as Fabian Bredlow forced to make multiple saves inside the first 15 minutes. The visitors recovered after the early blow, with decent chances for Jamie Leweling and Jeff Chabot in quick succession.
Hoeneß's side handed a huge advantage when the former Stuttgart academy player Laurine Curda was sent off for a reckless (and needless) challenge on Bila El Khannouss. VfB were dominant following the red card as Maximilian Mittelstädt rattled the woodwork with a powerful effort.
Stuttgart's top-scorer Ermedin Demirović had their first two big chances of the second-half, but he failed to beat Markus Schubert both times. Deniz Undav created both one-on-one chances for the Bosnian, but Paderborn's backup goalkeeper produced excellent saves.
However, Paderborn's valiant effort was hit by a sucker punch in the 90th minute. Undav decided the tie with a simple finish after Chris Führich's cutback when both coaches started to think about extra-time.
The two teams will be back in Bundesliga action on Saturday as Stuttgart travel to Leverkusen while Paderborn face the rejuvenated Borussia Mönchengladbach.
