Ivory Coast boost their chances of progressing to knockout stages for the first time in the World Cup with a late win against Ecuador. Substitute Amad Diallo scored the winner in the 90th minute after a brilliant surge by defender Wilfried Singo.

RB Leipzig’s superstar Yan Diomande played the entire game as he shone on the global stage. Hoffenheim’s youngster Bazoumana Touré also played 56 minutes before having to come off for the match-winner Diallo.

Including from a powerful strike by German-born John Yeboah, Ecuador were denied by the woodwork multiple times before Eintracht Frankfurt’s Elye Wahi thwarted in a similar way. Manchester United’s all-rounder secured the three points for the Elephants when a first goalless draw of the tournament seemed inevitable.

Ivory Coast will face group leaders Germany on matchday two, while Ecuador play Curaçao.
