Freiburg held at home by Mainz

Freiburg sailed into an early lead inside six minutes of the first whistle. A swift counterattack released Ritsu Dōan down the right sideline. The Japanese winger crossed centrally for Michael Gregoritsch to nod home. Since the Austrian moved to Freiburg, he has had a hand in every goal Christian Streich's side have scored against Mainz. 

The Freiburg striker almost bagged his brace on the half hour. A spectacular save from Robin Zentner diverted the ball around his left upright by the smallest of margins. However, the carnival club would respond just before the break. A beautiful low delivery from Anthony Caci was met by Jonathan Burkardt. At full stretch, the finish required added hunger to prod the ball to the net. 

Krauß replaced Barriero in midfield after the interval. Although chances were few, the best of them fell the way of Gregoritsch again. This time the striker narrowly missed the goal from an acute angle. Lukas Kübler's headed effort from a Dōan freekick also came close on the hour mark, but Zentner remained untroubled.

Entering the final stages, Gregoritsch tested Zentner again from 18-yards but to no avail. The winning goal never materialised for the Breisgauers or Mainz as both sides settled for a draw in the end.
