Neuer reacts to "extremely bitter" late mistake

Manuel Neuer has reacted to the mistake he made that led to Real Madrid's equaliser in Bayern Munich's 2-1 semi-final defeat on Wednesday.

Manuel Neuer made a number of crucial saves to keep Bayern Munich in the game against Real Madrid in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg, but it proved costly when he dropped the ball at the feet of Joselu, who equalised in the 88th minute.

The second-half substitute found the back of the net again soon after to send the Bavarians out of the competition and give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory to go through 4-3 on aggregate.

Neuer, of course, was devastated after the game.

“Anyone who’s ever played football knows how I’m feeling right now,” Neuer told DAZN.

“That we’ve been knocked out in the closing stages, having led 1-0, it’s extremely bitter. We’d taken one step to London, we saw ourselves in the final and now I’m lost for words.

“I have to be honest and say that I expected the ball to go in a slightly different direction, more towards the chest, but unfortunately it went a little higher.

“I didn't expect that there would be a small bump on the pitch and that the ball would come up that way. That made it difficult for me to control it. Then Joselu got there quicker and it was difficult to stop. It was brutal,” Neuer said.
