St. Juste had to be subbed off in the 20th minute of the team's 1-2 loss to FC Union Berlin over the weekend. Already without Moussa Niakhaté (thigh injury) and Alexander Hack (COVID), 20-year-old David Nemeth was forced onto the pitch to serve alongside Silvan Widmer and Stefan Bell.
Nemeth actually performed well and Niakhaté did come on to log some minutes later on. Assuming there are no complications stemming from his COVID bout, Hack should be once again be available when Mainz face Dortmund next weekend.
"We're down to the bare bones," Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel nevertheless remarked in a post match interview after the latest loss, "We were lucky during the second half of last season that we didn't have many injuries. Now we're saddled with them."
