When Schalke 04 lost their opening game of the season at the Veltins-Arena to fellow Bundesliga-seekers Hamburger SV, fans of the royal blues could only have feared the worst.

In fact, Schalke only won one of their first three games in the 2. Bundesliga, which left them hovering around midtable. Despite this nervy start, Die Königsblauen’s form has turned around and they’re starting to climb the table.

Heading into the October international break, Schalke sit just outside the top three positions and one win off the top. There are many reasons for the club’s turnaround in form, but none more so than veteran 2. Bundesliga striker Simon Terodde.

Played nine, scored eleven. That’s just what Simon Terodde does in the second tier of German football. The forward is currently on a total of 153 goals in the 2. Bundesliga and level with all-time goalscorer Dieter Schatzschneider. It’s obvious why he’s the man that clubs often look to in order to push for promotion to the Bundesliga.

The winner of the golden boot on three occasions, Terodde has previously helped teams such as VfL Bochum, VfB Stuttgart, FC Köln, and most recently Hamburg. Though he didn’t quite manage a top-two finish with HSV after two attempts, the reliant striker is certainly trying his best for Schalke.

Since the side’s 4-1 away defeat at the hands of Jahn Regensburg, Schalke have kept a much more well-organised defence. This is something that seriously needed addressing after their abhorrent time in the previous campaign. With on-form defenders such as Japanese international Ko Itakura, Marcin Kamiński, and German Under-21 international Malick Thiaw, this has enabled Simon Terodde to lead the line and clinch some important victories. This includes impressive wins away to Hansa Rostock (0:2) and third place Paderborn (0:1).

In the previous five league games, Schalke have won four times, with Terodde contributing seven goals. Though there is a long way to go in this season’s 2. Bundesliga, Schalke and their talisman appear to be hitting form at a crucial time. Schalke will fancy their chances at a title charge this year, with Simon Terodde most likely occupying top spot in the goalscoring chart.

Schalke’s next league game is at home to Dynamo Dresden on the 23rd of October. The club, along with their supporters, will be hoping for another three points and for Simon Terodde to stand alone as the league’s all-time top goalscorer.
