Freiburg survived a scare to beat 3. Liga side VfL Osnabrück on penalties away from home in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening.

It looked like Christian Streich's troops would go through via a narrow 1-0 win, but Lukas Gugganig's scored in the eleventh hour to cancel out Vincenzo Grifo's first-half opener and send the game into extra time.

The hosts then made it 2-1 through Sebastian Klaas with 108 minutes played, but failed to hold on to their lead after Ba-Muaka Simakala was sent off as Keven Schlotterbeck kept Freiburg alive with a goal in the 120th minute.

Freiburg ultimately prevailed in the following shootout, winning 3-2 on penalties after Andrew Wooten missed the final kick for Osnabrück.

Hertha BSC, Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, 1860 München, Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV and Mainz also booked their ticket to the next round yesterday.
