Gladbach coach Adi Hütter has defended his decision to let Marvin Friedrich start ahead of Matthias Ginter in Saturday's 1-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Friedrich joined Gladbach from Union Berlin earlier this week and made his starting debut yesterday at the expense of Ginter, who will leave the club as a free agent in the summer.

"With us, it's not one individual who wins a game. The decision was made for Marvin Friedrich to play," Hütter told reporters after the game.

"He was slightly unlucky with the penalty, but he still had a decent debut for Gladbach. He is a player for the future," added the Gladbach coach, referring to the fact that Friedrich committed a penalty in the second half.

"We made the decision quickly. We were happy to be able to complete this transfer. [Friedrich] is a player, who will be a part of this team in the future, and who has played many games for Union, including recently against Leverkusen. Therefore, he made his starting debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach today.

"We decided on Thursday that we would go into the game with Marvin Friedrich, and since [Tony] Jantschke did well as the left centre-back last week, that's what we opted to do."

Asked before the game if Ginter was on the bench for performance reasons, Hütter responded:

"The fact is that we will go our separate ways in the summer. [Sporting director] Max [Eberl] and I have spoken with Matthias Ginter and it's about the future on the one hand and performance on the other. His performance against Bayern was fine, I had nothing to criticize there. However, there were also games that were not so good."
