For reasons not yet known, Donyell Malen did not make the trip to Stuttgart along with his BVB colleagues. This was reported by the local "RN" (Ruhrnachrichten) newspaper. At the Thursday press conference, the Dutch striker was not a topic for head-coach Marco Rose. Sources at RN nevertheless noted that Malen did not partake in the squad's final training session afterwards and did not board the bus.

In writing its own confirmation of the Ruhrnachrichten report, German footballing magazine Kicker also notes that youngster Jamie Bynoe-Gittens did travel with the team to BaWü. Signed by the club from the Man City youth academy in September 2020 and promoted to a training place with the senior team during January camp, the 17-year-old may be poised to make his first professional matchday squad.
