The 20-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a contract until 2025 with Schalke, who are currently leading the 2. Bundesliga.
"Leo is a real talent and one of the best Austrian players in his age group," said Schalke sporting director Rouven Schröder.
"Leo has taken responsibility on the pitch for both Rapid and Austria U21s in the past before his knee injury halted his progress. His personality will fit really well into our squad. We’re really pleased that he’s decided to join us in the summer, regardless of which league we’re in" he added.
Greiml is in the final stages of his recovery from a cruciate ligament rupture that has kept him out since October.
"I'm working really hard to get back to full fitness as soon as I can. I can’t wait to get my chance to impress at Schalke from the summer onwards. I’m really thankful for the trust placed in me by the Schalke bosses and I believe that this is the right place for me to continue my development," Greiml commented.
An Austrian U21 international, Greiml has featured a total of 57 times for Rapid Vienna.
