Hamburger SV took a big step towards promotion to the Bundesliga as they saw off Hertha BSC 1-0 away from home in the first leg of the relegation/promotion tie between the two sides.

In a game with few clear-cut chances, Ludovit Reis scored the winner for HSV in the 57th minute as his cross-shot sailed over Hertha debutant Oliver Christensen and into the net.

Before that, towards the end of the first half, Ishak Belfodil thought he had given Hertha the lead, but his goal was ruled out after a VAR review.

The result means that HSV will go into the second leg on Monday at home knowing that they will be promoted if they avoid defeat. Hertha, meanwhile, now need a win at Volksparkstadion to have a chance of avoiding the drop.
