Werder Bremen will part ways with Ömer Toprak after the club captain turned down a new, performance-based deal, the newly-promoted Bundesliga side announced today.

"We were in close contact with Ömer over the last days, and know that this wasn’t an easy decision for him. We would have liked to continue working with him because he has taken on a very important role at the club over the last three years, both on and off the pitch, despite going through some tough periods himself," stated Werder head of scouting and professional football Clemens Fritz.

"As a captain, he was the leader of our team last year and helped lead the team through a tough time. We made him an offer that took several factors into consideration, but he has chosen to decline it. Naturally, we respect his decision. We wish Ömer all the best for the future, and thank him for everything that he has given to Werder over the last years."

The 32-year-old centre-back spent three seasons at Werder, making 61 appearances with three goals to his name.
