In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, the 33-year-old veteran defender revealed that he is "of course" thinking about when to hang up his boots.

"But I will decide that spontaneously," noted Hummels, whose contract expires in the summer of 2023.

The past season was "not good at all" in terms of injuries, Hummels admitted.

"At some point, when the time is right, I would like to decide whether, and if so, how to continue.

"I've told [Borussia Dortmund sporting director] Sebastian Kehl that if I put myself in BVB's place, I would not extend with me right now.

"I think both sides are right to be relaxed about it."

Hummels will face increased competition in the coming season following Dortmund's signings of German internationals Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck.
