Palsson played a rather important role in Schalke's promotion campaign last season, garnering three assists in 28 league appearances. New acquisitions at his position nevertheless rendered him expendable for the coming campaign in Germany's top footballing flight. Palsson will depart German football having scored six goals and registering 10 assists in three 2. Bundesliga seasons for Schalke and SV Darmstadt 98.
Regarding the high-value players from the failed 2020/21 relegation campaign that S04 sporting director Rouven Schröder has been deliberately trying to get off his roster, there was big movement this week with the sale of defender Ozan Kabak to Hoffenheim. Schröder made significant progress in reducing his squad payroll with Kabak's sale. The final transfer fee, combined with loan fees collected from Liverpool and Norwich City over the past couple of years, meant that Schalke also incurred only a small net loss on the player.
With Kabak gone, Schröder's focus swings towards orchestrating the sales of high-salary/value players Can Bozdogan and Amine Harit. In Harit's case, the trail leading to Portugal has gone cold. German footballing magazine Kicker reports that Schröder is trying yet again with Harit's most recent loan club Olympique Marseille to get a deal done. The S04 executive is quoted as being hopeful, yet adamant that he shall ultimately get top value for the player.
Bozdogan's reported upon move to Turkey has apparently fallen through. The latest reports emerging from Germany's main sporting tabloid suggest that, in lieu of a sale, Schröder has hammed out a loan arrangement with FC Utrecht. The 21-year-old will move to the Erdevisie for a €500,000 loan fee. The Sport Bild newspaper claims a €2.1 million purchase option is built into the deal.
