Mainz confirm injuries will keep Burkardt and Onisiwo from international duty

Shortly after Germany U21 international Jonathan Burkardt cancelled his trip to Antonio di Salvo's DFB Juniors, FSV Mainz 05 confirmed that the reasoning was a knee joint distortion suffered over the weekend.

Burkardt's fellow Mainz striker Karim Onisiwo will also forgo his current international tour-of-duty with a foot contusion.

FSV Mainz 05 strikers Jonathan Burkhardt and Karim Onisiwo both incurred injury during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. As a precaution, neither attacker will report for international exhibitions over the World Cup break. The Rheinhessen were quick to point out on their website that Onisiwo's injury was not serious. The team's current scoring points' leader will not report to Ralf Rangnick's Austrian national team as a mere precaution.

As for Burkardt, who has struggled with multiple injury woes this season, it might take significantly more time before the 22-year-old can return to his club's training pitch. If the "distortion" the club reports on turns out to be a "dislocation", recovery time could stretch out for 4-6 weeks. Burkardt has only been able to make 11 league appearances for the Nullfünfter this season. He finally netted his first goal of the campaign against Frankfurt on Sunday.
