Germany player ratings versus Japan
Here are our player ratings (on a scale from 1 to 10) for the German team after today's disappointing 1-2 loss against Japan.
Manuel Neuer – 5
Pulled off an exquisite save when the scoreline was still 1-0, but could have done more to prevent Japan's winner.
Niklas Süle – 3
Was expected to play in central defence, but started as a right-back instead at the expense of Thilo Kehrer. Didn't contribute much offensively and made some crucial defensive mistakes.
Antonio Rüdiger – 6
Left a relatively solid impression as Germany's defensive leader. Won plenty of balls and outmuscled the Japanese attackers on several occasions. Lost his cool a bit after Japan's equaliser.
Nico Schlotterbeck – 2
Made some huge mistakes and should have done more to stop Asano from scoring the winner.
David Raum – 4
Did well to come forward, but his final ball wasn't always the best. Became less involved as time went on and showed defensive weaknesses.
Joshua Kimmich – 5
Pulled the strings from the start of the match, but lost control as the game progressed.
Ilkay Gündogan – 7
Provided spark at times and was one of Germany's biggest goal threats. Scored the opener from the penalty spot and hit the post later.
Serge Gnabry – 5
Put in a spirited performance, but wasn't clinical enough and should have scored in the second half.
Thomas Müller – 4
Made his return from a long spell on the sidelines and had a rather quiet game.
Jamal Musiala – 6
Showed why he's widely regarded as one of Germany's brighest talents, impressing with his technical ability, but his finishing could have been better.
Kai Havertz – 3
Scored a goal that was ruled out for offside. Didn't convince in the striker position and never really made his mark on the game.

Jonas Hofmann – 4
