The field of candidates already being considered by FSV Mainz 05 has now reportedly been extended to include a prospect from the 2. Bundesliga. Düsseldorf's Rheinische Post reports that 22-year-old Austrian youth international Christoph Klarer. The former Southhampton academy man is in the midst of a highly successful season for Fortuna Düsseldorf that has seen his estimated market worth shoot up to €1.5 million.

It makes sense that Mainz will need to expand their field of candidates, particularly in light of the fact that Freiburg's Keven Schlotterbeck is now generating interest from multiple clubs. VfL Bochum are thought to be among the front-runners for the SCF talent, with FC Schalke 04 also joining the race to conclude a loan deal with the Breisgauer.

According to the RP, Mainz's interest in Klarer is "intense"; to the point that the Rheinhessen may be willing to fork over €2-3 million for the Fortuna starter. Klarer has started all but two league fixtures for the Flingeraner this season and is among the most highly marked defenders in Germany's second division.
