Bayern Munich are back at the top of the Bundesliga table after a 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena tonight.

After clearing Kostas Mavropanos' header off the line, Matthijs de Ligt went up the other end to give Bayern the lead in the 39th minute, unleashing a shot from distance that Fabian Bredlow could only parry into the net.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, who recently signed a new contract with Bayern, celebrated his extension by making it 2-0 just after the hour mark. Thomas Müller played a short pass into the path of the 33-year-old, who clinically slotted the ball past Bredlow.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann reacted by making a triple substitution, taking off Choupo-Moting, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman with an eye on Wednesday's crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

Thomas Muller and Leon Goretzka were also substituted before Juan José Perea pulled one back for Stuttgart with an 88th-minute header, but it was too late for the hosts to mount a comeback, although Tanguy Coulibaly came close to scoring an equaliser in stoppage time.

The win means Bayern sit top of the Bundesliga thanks to a better goal difference than Borussia Dortmund. Stuttgart are 15th.
