Reis with mixed feelings after latest Schalke draw

By Peter Weis   @PeterVicey

FC Schalke 04's undefeated "Rück-runde" continues thanks to a late penalty that enabled Thomas Reis' men to equalize late against Augsburg. The S04 gaffer conveyed mixed emotions in his post-match interview.

FC Schalke 04 remain on an eight-match unbeaten run after drawing Augsburg 1-1 on Saturday afternoon. The once written-off Königsblauen have not lost since matchday 17. In the second half of the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign, they have not been bested by anyone.

One nevertheless noticed a downtick in moments on Saturday as Schalke struggled to earn a point against a fellow bottom-third table side they might have been expected to do better against. It took an FC Augsburg red-card and penalty awarded at the last minute for die Knappen to take the point.

"After the first half, I felt my team was completely lacking conviction," S04 trainer Thomas Reis noted in his post-match interview with Sky Germany, "I addressed this very clearly at half-time."

"We always came second in the race for the second balls," Reis continued, "That was very annoying. We then gifted Augsburg a goal. The red-card helped us out a lot, but we were quite poor in taking advantage of that as well."

Reaching the conclusion of his interview, Reis seemed to backtrack a bit on his criticism leveled at the team. The foul awarded in injury time that enabled Marius Bülter to equalize from the spot at 90+3 may have been slightly lucky, but Reis wanted to emphasize that his team could still take confidence from the result.

"We also never gave up," Reis said, "In the end, we can be happy to take the point and don't need to be ashamed about it."
