The 2. Bundesliga's most valuable free-agent in the coming offseason has been linked with no fewer than five top tier sides in the new calendar year. Which team Fortuna Düsseldorf striker David Kownacki will be playing for next season remains a mystery; albeit one with more added intrigue after today. SV Werder Bremen were reported to be close to signing the 26-year-old according to a report emerging early today in Düsseldorf's "Rheinische Post" Newspaper.

The report was quickly refuted by both Germany's main sporting tabloid and Bremen's reliable fan-site "Deichstube". According to both sources, the Polish international has made no firm decision on his future and will continue to take his time weighing his options. "Sport Bild" nevertheless notes that Kownacki has received offers from both Werder and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Sky Germany and Kicker Magazine has previously linked the long-time F95 attacker with Union Berlin and SC Freiburg. Eintracht Frankfurt and FSV Mainz 05 were also thought to be interested. Gladbach and Werder may maintain something of advantage in the Kownacki race in that they can promise him a stable role and playing time as part of their respective rebuilding processes.

Gladbach will be without Marcus Thuram next season as the Frenchman gets set to depart on a free. Outgoing transfer rumors continue to swirl around both Werder strikers, Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch. It very much appears as if the Hanseaten might have to do without both after the coming offseason.
