Wind leads the charge as Wolfsburg stun Mainz

The final meeting of Bundesliga Matchday 30 offered up the clash of Wolfsburg and Mainz in Lower Saxony.

Both sides came into today’s game off the back of a hammering of Bochum and a defeat of Bayern respectively. Bo Svensson’s troops would be hoping to secure another three points as they remain hot on their pursuit of European football for next season.

In the end, it would be Wolfsburg who upset the apple cart with three decisive goals inside the first half-hour.

Mainz looked the livelier of the two as Kohr fired an early warning shot inside the first minute. However, ‘Die Wolfe’ made the dream start when Jonas Wind squeezed his chipped effort over the onrushing Zentner. Wolfsburg would double their advantage on 14 minutes – Patrick Wimmer’s 8th assist of the season found Bornauw, whose headed effort sailed over Zentner.

Mainz were left stunned when Wind grabbed his second before the half-hour mark. Ridle Baku scythed down the right flank and cut it to the back post for the Danish striker to tap home. Bo Svensson left distraught on the sideline as his charges found themselves 3-0 behind. Coen Kasteels had little to worry about in quiet first-half but was there when it counted to deny Onisiwo on 37 minutes.

Svensson made a double alteration after the break – Aaron Martin and Stach replaced Fernandes and Barreiro. An awkward landing for Silvain Widmer put a lengthy stop to action around the hour mark. An unfortunate sight followed as the Mainz skipper was stretchered off the field.

Aside from a Patrick Wimmer chance that failed to beat Zentner, the remainder of the tie became a bit of a formality. Nico Kovac opted to give Waldschmidt and Gerhardt a run, as Wind came off to a standing ovation. A big win for the green clad side from Lower Saxony, who leapfrog Mainz into seventh in the Bundesliga table.
