Dominant Dortmund hit Wolfsburg for six

After a gruelling ‘Kleines Revierderby’ draw away to Bochum last week, Dortmund sought to close the gap at the Bundesliga summit with a win over Wolfsburg.

Edin Terzić made a sole change to his line-up with Marius Wolf replacing Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Meanwhile, Wolfsburg came into the clash in high spirits.

Given some results fell in their favour this week, the side from Lower Saxony knew only a hair’s breadth stood between them in securing European football for next season.

However, Kovac's men would be beaten black and yellow by a ruthless BVB side who romped to a 6-0 victory.
As expected, an electric yellow atmosphere eased Dortmund into a commanding position. Bellingham heading over from Brandt’s corner made for the best chance inside those cagey opening exchanges. However, nerves would subside in the 15th minute as Adeyemi rose high to put Dortmund 1-0 to the good. Inside a frantic few minutes chances came at either end – Kobel expertly repelled the efforts of Wimmer in a one-on-one situation, while Malen ought to have backed himself rather than looking to tee up Bellingham on the counter.

‘Die Schwarzgelben’ would swiftly double their lead before the half hour. This time Adeyemi turned provider, leaving Bornauw in his wake to put the Wolfsburg goal at Haller’s mercy. Although Kobel was called upon to keep Kaminski at bay, Terzic’s troops bagged their third on 37 minutes. Julian Brandt availed of Wolfsburg’s high line and unselfishly squared for Donyell Malen making the supporting run.

The half-time break did little to knock Dortmund off their stride. Jude Bellingham adorned the scoresheet to the dismay of Casteels. The Belgian shot stopper bitterly unlucky to see the ball loop under the crossbar despite his save. ‘Die Wolfe’ confidence had completely frayed come the hour mark. A calamitous error from Bornauw coughed up possession in his own box, as Haller supplied Adeyemi for 5-0. The aforementioned Adeyemi should have secured his hattrick when Bellingham won a penalty. However, the German winger blazed over the bar sparing what was left of Wolfsburg’s shattered pride.

Casteels was all that prevented Dortmund from adding further insult to injury as the game neared its conclusion. A strong right hand on Marco Reus’ freekick was supplemented by a save to deny Moukoko moments later. Ultimately, in a repeat of last season’s result between the teams, Bellingham fired home for 6-0. Julian Brandt flicked into the path of his midfield partner who sent the Yellow Wall into ecstasy for a final time before the whistle sounded. Edin Terzić’s side cut the gap between Bayern to a solitary point.
