"With early detection, it is very well treatable with medication and curable," a club statement read, "There is a very high probability that health will be completely restored afterwards and that a normal life, including professional sports, will be possible."
As in years past, Lainer was expected to compete with American right-back Joe Scally for the starting right back role. The pair split the starting duties under the head-coaching regime of Adi Hütter during the 2021/22 campaign. Lainer eventually supplanted Scally during the latter stages of the 2022/23 campaign under the regime of Daniel Farke, starting the final five matches.
