Austria vs. Germany preview: Team news and predicted lineups

Here's our preview of Tuesday's friendly between Austria and Germany, including predicted lineups.
After a promising start to Julian Nagelsmann's reign, Germany suffered a setback on Saturday, losing 3-2 to Turkey in Berlin after a lackluster performance.

The defeat led to heavy criticism of Nagelsmann and his team, and the Euro 2024 hosts will look to bounce back when they take on Austria in Vienna on Tuesday night.

Nagelsmann surprisingly opted to start Kai Havertz on the left side of defense against Turkey, and the Arsenal star may start there again against Austria after earning praise from his coach.

"Kai said he wanted to do it, wanted to try it. I don't see it as a risk for him, but as a very, very big opportunity to play a key role at the Euros. For the first time in an unfamiliar position, he did extremely well and was probably our best player," Nagelsmann told Sky Germany after the match.

Leroy Sané played in a similar role on the right, but unlike Havertz, he's likely to be moved further forward into a role he's more used to.

That's according to Sport1, who reports that Mats Hummels could come into the three-man defense, with Benjamin Henrichs then moving to the right side.

After qualifying for the Euros with a 1-0 win over Azerbaijan last month, Austria beat Estonia 2-0 the other night, with Bayern's Konrad Laimer and Freiburg's Philipp Lienhart getting on the scoresheet.

They are just two of many Bundesliga players in the Austrian squad, which also includes the likes of Borussia Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer and RB Leipzig duo Christoph Baumgartner and Xaver Schlager.
