Augsburg come from behind to snatch victory over Gladbach

Quickfire goals from Tietz and Engels after the break helped Augsburg to a 2-1 win, putting them above Gladbach in the table as they rise to 10th place.
The final game of Matchday 18 took on a frantic pace from the get-go as both sides got early chances. Plea came close for the hosts, while minutes later Scally’s sloppy pass was picked off by Demirovic who set up Jensen but to no avail. Gladbach made the breakthrough in the 26th minute, nonetheless. Dahmen flapped at the ball which Plea hooked back into the box and Jordan bundled home despite the sea of Augsburg defenders on the line.

Some vital defending from Kevin Mbabu would prove crucial in preventing Gladbach extending their lead. The Swiss full-back did brilliantly to get up and clear the ball underneath his own crossbar.

Augsburg roared out of the blocks upon the restart and battled back to 1-1 inside two and a half minutes. A fine move down the right culminated in Mbabu crossing to the back post where Tietz headed home expertly. Joe Scally simply unable to fend off the physical striker. The comeback was completed in the 51st minute. As is so often the case Demirovic fed Arne Engels who had the simple task of placing it past Nicolas.

A moment of elation arose late on when Stefan Lainer returned to the pitch for the first time since overcoming cancer. Honorat came agonisingly close to restoring parity, however a relieved Dahmen was glad to see it fall into his hands. Iago also tested Nicolas at the other end with his weaker right foot. Thorup's side never looked back after that and secured all three points.
