Tuchel on Davies' form: "He has lacked confidence over a longer period of time"

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel talked extensively about Alphonso Davies' struggles this season at a press conference on Tuesday.
It's been a difficult season for Alphonso Davies, who has struggled to find his best form for Bayern Munich.

Most recently, he played a negative role in Bayern's loss to Werder Bremen on Sunday, allowing Mitchell Weiser to get past him and score the 1-0 winner for the Green and Whites.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel was asked about the Canadian international's struggles this season and admitted that the 23-year-old has been lacking confidence for a while.

"'Phonzy' is a very nice and sensitive guy. He is self-critical and I think the situation is holding him back more than inspiring him. Overall, he has lacked a bit of confidence over a longer period of time. But, of course, it's important that he shapes our game with his pace," Tuchel explained.

"We're working on making sure he's not afraid to take risks and continues to find his confidence. He's important against the ball. We're working on all the issues and will continue to trust him because we know he's a good guy."

Asked if Davies could be dropped against Union Berlin on Wednesday, Tuchel replied:

"Of course we have competition. Just because someone is on the bench doesn't mean we don't trust him. Phonzy has played every game recently, but there's competition for him too."

Tuchel went on to reveal that he has no new injury concerns ahead of tomorrow's game.

The big question now is whether he will make changes from the disappointing loss to Werder Bremen - and if so, how many.

"Everyone who played against Bremen is available. We always have to win. The crucial question is: will the players get another chance or is it time for a change? We'll wait for training and decide tomorrow," he said.
