Mainz and Union share spoils in wet weather
Mainz 05 and Union Berlin played out a 1-1 draw in wet conditions at the MEWA Arena on Wednesday night.
The conditions tonight were far from ideal tonight either, with hours of rain making the pitch waterlogged and difficult to play on. This had an impact on a tight match that ended in a 1-1 draw.
After Mainz came close to drawing first blood early on, Kevin Volland hit the post at the other end of the pitch.
Mainz then opened the scoring just before the break when Jonathan Burkardt headed in Nadiem Amiri's corner.
But Union hit back quickly and equalised on the stroke of half-time when Robin Gosens scored from a tight angle at the back post.
Mainz dominated after the break and Karim Onisiwo should have given them the lead in the 73rd minute when he headed just wide of the post after the ball fell to him following a poor clearance by Aissa Laidouni.
Union mostly lurked on the counter towards the end and could have won it late on when new signing Yorbe Vertessen found himself through on goal, but his low shot was easily saved by Robin Zentner.
The draw leaves Mainz 17th in the table, one point above bottom placed Darmstadt. Union Berlin sit 15th, just above the relegation zone.
