Since then, the club has been searching for a successor, and now they have found one within their own ranks, as current head of first-team football Clemens Fritz has been named as Baumann's successor.
"In order to do justice to our role and our claim to find the best solution for Werder, we commissioned an external consultancy to search for suitable candidates both nationally and internationally and held many discussions in which we were presented with other perspectives and exciting concepts," explained Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, chairman of the supervisory board of Werder Bremen.
"In the end, however, Clemens was able to convince us in several rounds of talks with his strategy and approach and thus prevail over the strong competition."
Clemens Fritz also commented on the decision, expressing optimism about the future:
"I am delighted with the decision of the supervisory board and the confidence placed in me. Over the past six years, I have worked closely with Frank Baumann and have become increasingly involved in the sporting side of things. I am very grateful to Frank for this.
"I am looking forward to the new challenge, I am very motivated, but I also have the necessary respect for this challenge. We have made very positive progress at Werder in recent years. I am convinced that we will continue this together as a team and also with my colleagues."
