Daniel Baier's contract with Augsburg has been terminated by mutual consent, the club have announced.

Baier, who served as Augsburg captain, still had another year left on his contract, but will be leaving the club after a 2019/20 that saw him fall down the pecking order.

"Daniel Baier joined FCA in the 2. Bundesliga, got promoted with the team in 2011 and has played more Bundesliga games for the club than any other player. But it's clear to him and to us that at the age of 36, he won't be lacing his football boots forever," said Augsburg boss Stefan Reuter in a statement.

"That's why we had an open and honest discussion about his personal situation and his changed role. At the end of these talks, we agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent," he continued.

Daniel Baier, who made a total of 355 appearances for Augsburg, commented:

"For me, it's a chance for a new adventure towards the end of my career, because I still feel in top shape. Or I could retire after staying up in an extraordinary season. I will discuss this with my family in the coming weeks. I would like to thank FCA, the staff, the city, which I now call home, and most of all the FCA fans for the past 11 years."
