Official: Mainz part company with Achim Beierlorzer

Mainz parted company with head coach Achim Beierlorzer after a chaotic week.
Achim Beierlorzer has been relieved of his duties as Mainz 05 coach with immediate effect.

The 52-year-old has been unable to hold on to his job after Saturday's 1-4 loss to Stuttgart, which was the culmination of a turbulent week that saw the club's players go on strike in mid-week due to the suspension of forward Adam Szalai.

Assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take over the job until further notice, with Academy Manager reportedly Jan Siewert being considered as a more permanent solution.

"Together, we have looked very intensively at our sporting path and at the question of how we can take account of current developments and give the team new impetus in the short term and further down the road. The result of these very open and honest talks is that we as a club will not continue our cooperation with Achim Beierlorzer," said Mainz sporting director Rouven Schröder.

"The time we spent together was marked by a successful fight against relegation and difficult working conditions due to the corona pandemic. Achim Beierlorzer deserves our respect for his work and his attitude during this difficult time for all os us."

Beierlorzer becomes the second Bundesliga coach to lose his job this season after David Wagner was dismissed by Schalke 04 on Sunday.
