"Arne approached us with the desire to get more playing time elsewhere within the Bundesliga. We wish him to develop further in a new environment and are looking forward to welcoming him back to Berlin in the summer," said Hertha boss Michael Preetz.
Maier commented:
"I'm very pleased that I have been able to extend my contract with Hertha BSC and would now like to get match practice in Bielefeld. I'm looking forward to the task at Arminia, where I can gain a lot of experience."
Maier's new deal with Hertha expires in 2023, according to Kicker, who claims the 21-year-old turned down interest from Rangers and Sampdoria to join the newly-promoted Bundesliga side.
