Alphonso Davies was arguably the biggest breakthrough star of Bayern München's sensational 2019/20 campaign, which saw the 19-year-old nail down a starting spot on the left side of defence at the expense of the club's record signing, Lucas Hernandez.

However, since the new season has started, Hernandez has been Bayern coach Hansi Flick's preferred option at left-back.

"Lucas Hernandez has put in very stable performances and is playing at a very good level. He does us good with his aggressiveness," Flick said after Saturday's 4-1 win over Arminia Bielefeld, in which Davies came on to replace Hernandez with just a few minutes left to play.

"For a young player like Alphonso Davies, it's not easy due to the many games last season and the short pre-season. It's important that he gets back on track and can bring his strengths back into play. But to do so, he needs a certain fitness and mental freshness," said Flick.
