Lukas Klostermann faces a spell on the sidelines after being forced off in RB Leipzig's 2-0 win over Augsburg in the weekend.
Klostermann needs surgery on his left knee, the club have announced on Tuesday, without putting a timeframe on the German international's return.
The versatile defender has started all RB Leipzig's five games so far this season.
After coming on to replace Klostermann against Augsburg, Willi Orban is expected to fill in for the 24-year-old when RB Leipzig begin their Champions League campaign against Turkish side Basaksehir on Tuesday.
