Selke fumes over Wamangituka's poor sportsmanship: "That's just disrespectful!"
A hitherto boring Bundesliga match suddenly sprung to life in the final four minutes on Sunday. Silas Wamangituka's second goal in Stuttgart's 2-1 victory over Bremen generated plenty of controversy on the pitch.
After the match, Bremen substitute Davie Selke had plenty of energy left to tell the Sky microphones exactly what he thought of it.
Seconds before normal time elapsed at the Weserstadion on Sunday, an unlucky bounce led to some slapstick. Bremen's Ömer Toprak chested a ball back to keeper Jiri Pavlenka. The Bremen keeper didn't appear ready to receive the ball, and then whiffed on a clearance kick after a divot on the pitch caused it to bounce up on him.
After the match, Bremen substitute Davie Selke had plenty of energy left to tell the Sky microphones exactly what he thought of it.
The mix-up/mess-up enabled Stuttgart attacker Silas Wamangituka to collect the ball and dribble directly toward an empty net from some 30 yards out. In an apparently conscious attempt to mock his opponents, the Congolese striker slowly trotted toward the goal and waited for a Bremen player to run toward him before finally stopping right before the goal-mouth to put the ball over the line.
The action earned him an earful from Bremen's Davie Selke, who provocatively stormed over to admonish him for the display. Match official Frank Willenborg also booked Wamangituka for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Still visibly fuming after the match, Selke explained why he felt compelled to confront the goal-scorer face-to-face.
"That's just disrespectful," Selke noted, "The lad had a good game and scored two goals. He should have simply put the ball over the line and celebrated his goal instead of loafing around like that."
The lapse/spot of bad luck ended up costing the Hanseaten much more than they might have thought when it actually occurred. Less than three minutes later, Selke headed in a goal after fellow substitute Nick Woltemade kept an attacking sequence alive with two splendid aerial wins.
"We were up and applying the pressure," Selke continued, "In my opinion, it was only a matter of time before the ball went in. That's why [the second goal] was extremely frustrating."
