'Die Adler' are understood to have identified the 19-year-old forward as an option to fill the void left by Bas Dost, who recently departed Deutsche Bank Park to join Club Brugge.
Frankfurt could face competition from FC Köln, who could reignite their interest in Zirkzee after missing out on his last summer, according to Bild and Sky.
FC Köln boss Horst Heldt has since confirmed that he was in talks with Bayern München sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and head coach Hansi Flick about a possible transfer for the young forward.
"We have been in contact. I exchanged ideas with Hasan [Salihamidzic] and Hansi [Flick], but the timing wasn't right," Heldt has said in an interview with TZ and the Münchner Merkur.
Zirkzee, who has been limited to just three Bundesliga appearances this season, admitted last month that he would be open to heading out on loan in January.
"It's important that I play full games. I try to stay fit, and if I can head out on loan during the winter break, that might be an option," Zirkzee told Algemenen Dagblad.
