Augsburg lose Iago long-term after ankle surgery

Augsburg starting left-back "Iago" Amaral Borduchi underwent ankle surgery on Monday evening. On Tuesday, the Bavarian club confirmed that he would miss several weeks after the major intrusive procedure.
FCA head coach Heiko Herrlich's back-four may turn to be a one match experiment after the Fuggerstädter trainer lost his most regularly used fullback; possibly until the final stages of the season. A concrete timetable for the Brazilian's return was not yet given, but intrusive ankle surgery ordinarily implies a recovery time of 6-8 weeks.

The 23-year-old played a very important role in Herrlich's starting XI over the course of the campaign. Iago started all 14 fixtures for which he was deemed fit. The default replacement for the departed Philipp Max garnered one goal and two assists in 2020/21 action.

Mads Pedersen, a young Danish prospect who sometimes goes by the name Mads Valentin or Mads Giering to avoid confusion with other Danish athletes of the same name, will likely be called upon as the replacement. Pedersen made just five appearances this year and had been vocal about his hopes for more playing time.
