Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of Mainz captain Danny Latza, who will make the switch to Veltins-Arena at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who is out of contract this summer, has agreed a deal until 2023 with 'The Royal Blues'.

"In this challenging period, it is a really positive sign for the whole club that Danny Latza has chosen to join us despite having other options," said Schalke interim head of sport Peter Knäbel.

"Danny has committed to us early on, even knowing that playing in the Bundesliga 2 is currently the most likely scenario for next season. That underlines his connection with Schalke."

Latza was born in Gelsenkirchen and came through the youth ranks at Schalke 04 before moving on to SV Darmstadt in 2011. The 31-year-old later joined Bochum before signing with Mainz in 2015.

He has made 23 appearances for Mainz this season with one goal and two assists to his name.
