Union Berlin to make Taiwo Awoniyi transfer permanent

Liverpool FC’s Taiwo Awoniyi is all set to move permanently to East Germany, after having spent the last season on loan at Union Berlin.

Rumours went around during the climax of the European season of Union’s intention to extend his loan agreement but they club have done one step better and secured him on a €7.5m transfer fee. The Berlin-based club have beaten Mainz to his signature, where he spent 2019/20 on loan.

He will have a five year contract with Die Eisernen.

Unable to secure the Nigerian a UK work permit (which he finally received in May 2021), Liverpool have loaned him out for six consecutive seasons across seven loan spells – since first arriving in 2015.

This will be the third German he will play for, having spent his first loan spell in 2015/16 with FSV Frankfurt in 2.Bundesliga.

The 23-year-old bullish attacker is known for his strong presence in the final-third, along with his team play and work ethic.

The centre-forward’s most fruitful loan was at Belgian second division side Royal Excel Mouscron in 2017/18, when he scored 11 goals in 16 appearances.

He made 22 appearances for Union last season and scored 5 goals.
