Earlier this summer, Lukas Nmecha joined Wolfsburg for an initial fee of €8m and put pen to paper on a 4-year contract. Nmecha played twelve times for Wolfsburg in a loan spell back in 2019, though he failed to score for Die Wölfe. Nmecha is now a much-improved player and Wolfsburg fans can expect a different player to the one they saw in the 2019-20 season.

Nmecha will add goals to Wolfsburg’s attack, and will be a player to keep an eye on for the 2021-22 season. The striker impressed in Belgium last season, after scoring 18 times in the league for Anderlecht.

Nmecha also played a pivotal role in guiding Germany’s Under 21s to European Championship glory. He netted 4 times in the tournament, including a goal against Denmark in the quarterfinals and the winner in the 1-0 win over Portugal in the final.
The strikers’ new side are under new management after Oliver Glasner departed for Eintracht Frankfurt, with Mark van Bommel replacing Glasner as Wolfsburg’s new head coach.

Nmecha will be important for Wolfsburg as they head into the 21/22 season looking to balance domestic football with the Champions’ League group stage. Nmecha’s role will be to take the pressure off last season’s top scorer Wout Weghorst. The signing of Nmecha will prevent any over-reliance on the Dutchman who scored 20 league goals last season, 13 more than the next highest goal scorer for Wolfsburg.

It will be intriguing to see if Van Bommel will try and fit both Weghorst and Nmecha into the same eleven or if he sees Nmecha as a back up to Weghorst this season.
With the number of goals both players can score, it would be surprising if Van Bommel does not try to find a system that can accommodate both players to play regularly and if he does, that will increase Nmecha’s importance to Wolfsburg.

This season also offers an opportunity on an individual level for Nmecha. He has the platform of the Champions League and playing domestically in one of Europe’s best leagues to showcase his talents. There is also the prospect of a new national team manager looking to build a successful team for the 2022 World Cup. Therefore, this season offers a chance for Nmecha to impress German fans and new German head coach Hansi Flick.

This season has the potential to be a memorable one for Lukas Nmecha if he can perform well in the Bundesliga this season.
