Confirmed: Casteels takes over Wolfsburg captaincy
New VfL Wolfsburg trainer Mark van Bommel informed members of the German press that he had selected his new team captain on Friday.
After van Bommel informed the team on Saturday morning, the club confirmed that keeper Koen Casteels is the club's next skipper.
Speculation that veteran Joshua Guilavogui would pass the VfL Wolfsburg captain's armband onto a different player is no longer speculation. Guilavogui, along with midfielder Maximilian Arnold, will remain alternates while keeper Koen Casteels snaps on the sash.
After van Bommel informed the team on Saturday morning, the club confirmed that keeper Koen Casteels is the club's next skipper.
Casteels, who has played for Germany's green company team since 2015, often deputized for Guilavogui last season as injuries left the Frenchmen unable to perform his duty. He has made 178 Bundesliga appearances for die Wölfe.
The club's now former captain is on record as saying that he wished to reassert himself this season, but didn't necessarily feel the desire to wear the armband for the fourth consecutive season.
