Union took the lead early, as new record signing Awoniyi finished neatly to beat Hradecky in a quick break in the 7th minute. Moussa Diaby equalized in the 12th minute, cutting through the defense with pace after being set up by Frimpong.
Leverkusen looked in control of the game for the most part, but Union, spurred on by the 11,000 fans in The Stadion An der Alten Försterei, defended well and were quick and dangerous on the counter.
Union left-back Niko Gießelmann and playmaker Genki Haraguchi gave noteworthy performances.
For Gerardo Seoane, Kerem Demirbay played a more advanced role compared to what he played last season, as Amiri moved to the wing. Diaby and Palacios were full of energy in the Bundesliga opener for their side.
A draw was a fair result, with both sides having their share of chances.
