A deal that some expected to drag out was instead quickly confirmed late Sunday. A potential loan for congenitally loaned out Leverkusen forward Joel Pohjanpalo certainly had the potential to get bogged down in negotiations as the Finnish international would have to extend his expiring contract with his parent club before getting loaned out.

Sources at Germany's preeminent footballing publication report that the 26-year-old opted to extend with die Werself through 2023. At present, there is little information about the extension that keeps Pohjanpalo on the Bayer rolls through the end of next season. The possible existence of a purchase clause for Turkish first division side Caykur Rizespor also cannot be confirmed.

Ostensibly, Pohjanpalo quickly agreed to a contract extension in the interest of getting more playing time this season. Despite showing consistent promise out on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf, Hamburger SV, and 1. FC Union Berlin, the veteran attacker's prospects for playing time behind Patrik Schick and Lucas Alario would have been slim.
