Magdeburg climbed to fourth place in 2. Bundesliga standings after their dominant win over Hannover. The visitors sacked Christian Titz after a poor start to the season, but the former FC Bayern and Germany striker Sandro Wagner also started his reign with a heavy defeat.
It only took three minutes for the hosts to take the lead as Moritz-Broni Kwarteng scored his first Magdeburg goal with a slice of luck. There were chances at either end for the rest of the half, but it was Petrik Sander’s side who succeeded in stretching their lead.
Emmanuel Iyoha already surpassed his best goalscoring season at Fortuna Düsseldorf with his fifth of the campaign. Mateusz Żukowski saw his early second-half strike cancelled for an offside, but he also did get into the scoresheet with Magdeburg’s third goal five minutes from time.
Magdeburg started the season with a 6-1 defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig at Avnet-Arena, but they have now won three successive home games for the first time in 2. Bundesliga. Pre-season promotion favorites Hannover only collected seven points from their first seven games.
Wagner's home debut will be against St. Pauli in next week's Topspiel, while Magdeburg face Dynamo Dresden the following day in the Elb-Clásico.
