St. Pauli improved their position in the 2. Bundesliga with a convincing 2-0 victory over Karlsruher SC, whose difficult run of form continued in Hamburg.
Abdoulie Ceesay opened the scoring in the 32nd minute before Lars Ritzka doubled the hosts’ advantage shortly after half-time. Despite creating opportunities of their own, Karlsruhe were unable to find a response, with a late goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
St. Pauli started brightly at the Millerntor-Stadion, putting the visiting defence under pressure and creating several promising opportunities during the opening stages.
Youssoupha Niang came close to giving the hosts an early advantage, but Karlsruhe goalkeeper Hans Christian Bernat produced an important save to keep the scores level.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 32nd minute. Ceesay found the net to put St. Pauli ahead, although Karlsruhe were left disappointed with the goalkeeping involved in the incident.
The visitors had also believed they had taken the lead earlier in the first half, only for their effort to be disallowed following a referee's decision.
St. Pauli continued to look the more threatening side as half-time approached, with Karlsruhe struggling to establish defensive control. The hosts went into the interval with a 1-0 advantage.
St. Pauli wasted little time extending their lead after the restart.
In the 51st minute, Eric Smith delivered a free-kick from the left, with Ritzka getting the decisive touch from close range to direct the ball beyond Bernat and into the net.
The goal gave the home side a valuable two-goal cushion and left Karlsruhe with a difficult task if they were to rescue anything from the contest.
However, the visitors showed signs of life in response. St. Pauli goalkeeper Ben Voll produced an important save in the 54th minute to deny a Karlsruhe opportunity and preserve his side's advantage.
Karlsruhe attempted to build momentum, but St. Pauli remained difficult to break down. The hosts also continued to threaten going forward, although they were unable to add a third goal.
Karlsruhe's hopes of a comeback suffered another setback in the 83rd minute when Lilian Egloff appeared to pull a goal back.
Following a VAR review, however, the effort was ruled out for offside, leaving the visitors still searching for their first goal of the afternoon.
The decision summed up a frustrating day for Karlsruhe, who had moments of promise but lacked the finishing and consistency required to turn those opportunities into a result.
St. Pauli managed the closing stages effectively to protect their clean sheet and secure all three points.
The victory provides St. Pauli with an important lift as they look to build consistency in the second tier. Their attacking pressure produced two decisive goals, while their defensive organisation and Voll's contribution ensured that Karlsruhe could not find a way back into the game.
For Karlsruhe, the defeat deepens an increasingly concerning spell of form. The visitors suffered their fourth defeat in five matches and have now gone three consecutive league games without scoring, leaving them second from bottom in the table.
Although Karlsruhe showed glimpses of attacking promise, their inability to convert chances proved costly once again.
St. Pauli, meanwhile, will take confidence from a professional performance that combined clinical finishing with a disciplined defensive display.
