Wolfsburg climbed past Heidenheim in the table after a deserved 3-1 win in the battle of last season's Bundesliga clubs.
Both teams created their first chances of the game inside the very first minute. Seconds after debutant Timon Wellenreuther denied Christian Conteh, Alexander Bernhardsson scored his fourth Wolfsburg goal with a quickfire finish at the other end.
The visitors were the better side after that, and they got their reward with their seventh headed goal of the season. The usual suspect Jan Schoppner also provided the assist to his captain Patrick Mainka with a header.
Including Bernhardsson's effort that hit the post, both sides had chances to take the lead before the half-time break. It was Robin Glatzel who succeeded in restoring Wolfsburg's lead with a measured header from Joakim Mæhle's delivery in injury-time.
The former HSV striker has now five goals in his last three appearances at Volkswagen Arena. The hosts kept momentum after the break as Muhammed Damar joined the scoresheet with his third goal in as many games.
The ex-Hoffenheim midfielder also scored a hat-trick against Havelse in a friendly game during the international break, and he could've repeated that feat if it wasn't for a couple of decent saves from Thomas Dahne.
With Hertha BSC and Nürnberg dropping points on Friday, Tobias Strobl’s men had a successful matchday in their hopes of achieving an immediate promotion to Bundesliga. Heidenheim are now winless in their last three games after winning the previous three encounters.
