Canada national team coach Jesse Marsch confirmed the reason behind leaving Alphonso Davies out of his squad for the upcoming international break. The Canadian Soccer Association earlier noted that “Davies will be unavailable for selection due to the celebration of his marriage and honeymoon” while announcing the squad.

"Alphonso (Davies) wanted to be here, and we wanted him in this camp, but he got married shortly after the World Cup,” the former RB Leipzig coach briefed the media about the situation that kept the 25-year-old out of the squad.

“A lot was going on with him at the World Cup. He’s now playing really well and looking really fit and feeling really good, so we just wanted to make sure he’ll be ready to commit fully when we need him for meaningful matches," added the coach who led Canada to a first-ever qualification to World Cup knockout stages.

Davies has only played one game during the tournament due to fitness issues. He started the season well with an assist in the Bundesliga opener against Stuttgart and a goal on Champions League matchday one versus Bodø/Glimt.

The left-back has been the captain of his national team since Copa America 2024. Canada will host CONMEBOL sides Chile and Peru before facing neighbours the United States in friendlies in the upcoming cycle.
